DTMs from Full Wave Form LiDAR

  1. The Vienna Univ. of Technology is offering a workshop this week about exploiting full waveform data.
  2. The course description indicates that the use of full waveform can lead to greater accuracy in processing DTMs.
  3. LAS 1.3 was recently approved with the main purpose being to support full waveform data.

Unfortunately I just became aware of this workshop over the weekend, so this notice is much too late for most, but the content is very compelling and I think worth noting. For those located near Vienna, Austria, which I think was just rated the best city to live in worldwide, the workshop is sponsored by the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Christian Doppler Laboratory for Spatial Data from Laser Scanning and Remote Sensing at the Vienna University of Technology, December 12 – 13. I hope it will be offered again. I will attempt to obtain more notice as well as more details on the course itself.

What caught my attention was the description of the workshop – “The DTM quality strongly depends on the correct classification of the 3D point cloud into terrain and off-terrain echoes. Especially dense and low vegetation is considered as problematic. With full waveform laser scanners, commercially available since 2004, a considerable amount of these problems can be overcome. Additionally, new quality indicators can be derived.”

The ASPRS LAS Standards committee recently approved Version 1.3 primarily so that it would support full waveform data. This is certainly a technology trend that offers real improvement in data analysis and potentially automated feature extraction.

If anyone finds out more about the workshop please let us know.
