Extreme Laser Scanning Accuracy Produces Lifelike Quality

  1. What seems like extreme accuracy in the terrestrial scanning market is SOP in the metrology world.
  2. Bountiful Baby purchased a Laser Design SURVEYOR for the high accuracy – 0.011 mm and resolution – 0.005 mm.
  3. This will allow them to create 3D CAD files to support their reverse engineering processes.

For reverse engineering applications what seems like extreme dimensional control in the terrestrial laser scanning arena is standard operating procedure in a manufacturing environment. Although it might be seem like overkill, Bountiful Baby, a doll maker in Salt Lake City, UT has recently purchased what the manufacturer claims is the highest accuracy laser line scanner on the market.

The SURVEYOR WS-Series laser scanner from Laser Design is reported to be capable of 0.011 mm accuracy and a resolution of 0.005 mm. According to Laser Design, this is what allows Bountiful Baby to produce the lifelike quality dolls that they are known for worldwide.

Bountiful Baby will use the SURVEYOR WS system to document their doll designs in 3D CAD files.  Having an archive of CAD models will enable them to reproduce, by reverse engineering, any of their baby models much more quickly and accurately than before.

It’s a completely different world from terrestrial and mobile scanning. It’s too bad there isn’t more sharing of information with the metrology world.

It was bad enough when the gaming industry was ahead of us, but now the doll industry!
