Istanbul – World’s Largest Scanning Project

1. The City of Istanbul is getting a Level 3 CityGML database with over 100,000 scanned buildings.
2. Cyclone II Topo is much easier to learn and the new Cyclone 7 has been built on a new pcE platform.
3. The North Sea is still the home of the most sophisticated civil engineering projects in the world.

ESRI Survey Summit Wrap Up

1. The Summit did not place much emphasis on 3D – maybe we can have a session next year on Digital Cities and CityGML.
2. The most audience reaction came on a comment about coordinate systems.
3. The hybrid scanner/total station is the preferred instrument by Bechtel’s survey crews.

3D Fusion Summit Report

1. Between 70 and 80 paid to attend yesterday’s Summit at MIT.
2. The major software vendors demonstrated that they can support CityGML today.
3. Google and Factory Mutual were among the participants.

CityGML

1. The CityGML encoding standard is a rich and valuable road map for building 3D urban geo-databases – kudos to all involved.
2. LiDAR and laser scanning are the most appropriate technology for building out these databases.
3. We can choose to take advantage of this or re-invent the wheel.

2. CityGML has 5 levels of detail well defined for 3D cities.
3. We need to document the early digital cities success stories in terms of ROI.

1. This could be the most important market opportunity for 3D laser scanning.
2. The OGC and ISO have developed important database standards.
3. Berlin, Germany and Glasgow, Scotland are excellent examples.
