National Open Topographic LIDAR Facility Gets $1.7 Million

1. The NSF has awarded $1.7 million to SDSC and ASU for the creation of an online LIDAR data website.
2. The goal is to make the access to LIDAR data much easier for end users.
3. This is a similar mission to the USGS CLICK site and I hope the 2 groups will work together.

Laser Scanning, Crime Scenes and Video Gaming

1. The NSF recently awarded $1.4 million for the development of a crime scene reconstruction platform.
2. This platform will support the use of laser scanned data using a popular video gaming engine to create compelling animations of the actual crime timeline.
3. The company – 3rdTech is an incubator for commercializing technology from the Univ. of North Carolina.

Innovative 3D Laser Scanning Course

1. Courses in 3D laser scanning are almost non-existent in either 2 or 4 year college programs in the US.
2. Dr. John Yu and the NSF have created and implemented a valuable model course curriculum.
3. We all need to accept the challenge of making this happen in our local communities.

INTERFACE

1. Thanks to an In the Scan reader today’s blog is all about Interface – a laser scanning consortium.
2. Unavco is funded by NSF and NASA. They manage the Interface consortium.
3. This is a model for other parts of the US and perhaps other countries.
