- CadMaps is using Silverlight to create a video index to large LiDAR datasets.
- The video acts as pointer into the file.
- LiDAR cross sections are rapidly retrieved and displayed on the fly.
One of the best computer programmers that I know has been telling me that Silverlight and similar web frameworks are revolutionizing the development of rich Internet applications. There is so much technology built into these environments that new apps can be rapidly built that have incredible performance.
An example of this is from the folks at CadMaps who have used a number of the Silverlight tools to build a video index to extremely large LiDAR datasets. Video codecs harnessed to Silverlight MediaPlayer make a useful compression technique for large image sets. The video, in essence, is a pointer into a large library of image frames. Data collected in a framewise spatial sense can leverage this technique. Click here for more details.
To demonstrate the technology LiDAR cross sections are retrieved on the fly when you move the red slider in this Bing Maps application. If you want to see performance zoom in and out on the imagery.

Hi Gene,
Thanks for the pingback. I should clarify that I’m now with OnTerraSys rather than cadmaps. It’s just that I haven’t gotten my blog switched over yet.

I’m a faithful reader of your LiDAR blogs!
thanks
