3D River Mapping with VZ-600i

RIEGL’s VZ-600i hybrid terrestrial laser scanner is advancing 3D river mapping in some of Europe’s most challenging waterways. Recent projects on Vienna’s Danube Canal and London’s River Thames showcase how this versatile system captures high-precision 3D datasets, even in areas previously inaccessible for detailed survey work.

In Vienna, RIEGL partnered with viadonau to tackle the narrow Danube Canal, where GNSS coverage is limited and bridge undersides are difficult to access. Mounted on viadonau’s survey vessel Alpha, the VZ-600i produced a 3D dataset with 1.5-centimeter spatial resolution and 2–3-centimeter positional accuracy. Ulrich Zangerl of viadonau highlighted the canal’s tight geometry and heavy traffic, noting that the scanner’s flexibility enabled detailed mapping from the water where terrestrial surveys alone would be insufficient.

Building on the Danube success, RIEGL applied the VZ-600i to the River Thames. The scanner captured detailed measurements beneath heritage bridges, which were combined with previous VMX-2HA mobile mapping data to create a coherent point cloud. Dave Foster of RIEGL UK emphasized the system’s productivity and hybrid scanning capability, while Bernhard Groiss praised its ability to transition seamlessly from static to boat-mounted kinematic operation.

Hybrid Scanning for Accurate 3D River Mapping Lidar
The VZ-600i demonstrates centimeter-level accuracy in motion and delivers actionable insights for engineers, hydrologists, and planners. By capturing previously inaccessible areas in high detail, it enhances both infrastructure safety and environmental monitoring along critical waterways.

Benefits of 3D River Mapping Lidar for Engineers and Planners
These projects set new benchmarks for sustainable waterway management. From Vienna to London, the VZ-600i enables safer, more precise surveys while providing high-fidelity datasets that support informed decision-making for infrastructure and ecosystem preservation.
