CHC Navigation Impresses Crowds at Geo Week 2022

I had the opportunity to meet with Bruce Eyre, North American Dealer Manager for CHC Navigation at the recent Geo Week event in Denver, CO. For those of you who may not be aware of CHC Navigation they began by offering GNSS base stations and rovers in 2003. Today they have a presence in more than  100 countries and over 1,300 employees worldwide. Their navigation and positioning solutions cover multiple industries such as geospatial, construction, agriculture and marine. They are one of the fastest growing companies in geomatics technologies.

At the Geo Week booth CHC was highlighting the new AlphaAir 450 lidar sensor designed for the UAV market given its compact size and light weight. It has an integrated Livox Avia lidar sensor, 26 MP camera and a Honeywell high-precision inertial navigation system. The AA 450 has an integrated DJI Skyport for direct connection to the DJI M300 and M210 V2 UAVs, as well as an A port for connection to the CHCNAV BB4 quad copter UAV.

Billed as “The Best Cost- Performance UAV Lidar in its Class,” this system is able to deliver a quick ROI as part of an overall strategy to democratize mobile mapping. If you are looking to add lidar to your UAV operations this may be the system for you.

Speaking of mobile mapping, CHC was also demonstrating the Alpha3D mobile mapping system that can be mounted on a number of dynamic platforms such as a vehicle or USV – uncrewed surface vessel for marine applications. This system features the RIEGL scanner, a high resolution, 30 MP HDR panoramic camera (Ladybug) camera and a Honeywell IMU. The RIEGL has a range up to 420 m and a scan rate of 1 M points per second.

The system can be expanded to support a second lidar scanner and additional imagery sensors, if needed. The operation is supported with browser based CoCapture, on an Android device. Looks like an excellent system for entering the mobile mapping market.
