Ancient brick wall with a horse relief, part of Babylon's archaeological site.
As reported in the NY Times today the 3D laser scanning was high risk/reward for the team working to document Iraq’s most famous archaeological site, the ruins of ancient Babylon.

Fortunately this took place in 2010 which given the current situation in the region makes it even more valuable.

Nervous about working in a country that had been tearing itself apart for years, Dirk Häusleigner and Erwin Christofori concentrated on the four-day task in hand — laser-scanning the towering 2,600-year-old walls of Ishtar Gate and the nearby Nabu-sha-Khare Temple which was partly, and damagingly, reconstructed during Saddam Hussein’s era.

The article provides important insight to the challenges associated with preserving these sites.

Thanks to Bill Gutelius for the tip.
