Accurate information about existing conditions is essential to successful design, construction, and asset management—but creating that complete picture requires understanding both what is visible above ground and what lies beneath it.
In an upcoming two-part webinar series from DGT Associates and FARO Insight, attendees will see how modern reality capture and geospatial technologies can be used to document both environments and turn field data into actionable digital twins.
The first webinar focuses on above-ground reality capture, including 3D laser scanning, point clouds, BIM, construction verification, and digital twin workflows. The second will go below ground, exploring how LiDAR, ground penetrating radar (GPR), utility locating, and geospatial intelligence can be combined to map subsurface infrastructure.
Part 1: From 3D Laser Scanning to Digital Twins
Tuesday, October 6 · 12 PM ET | 9 AM PT
The first webinar will demonstrate how DGT Associates uses 3D laser scanning and reality capture to accurately document existing conditions for buildings, infrastructure, historic sites, and complex facilities.
DGT has been working with terrestrial laser scanning for more than two decades. The company first used the technology in 2001 while performing as-built surveys for Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel project—the Big Dig—and has continued developing its reality capture practice as scanning hardware and software have advanced.
Today, DGT combines FARO terrestrial laser scanners with conventional surveying and a range of processing and modeling tools to move from field capture to finished project deliverables.
During the webinar, attendees will see how that process works—from registering and processing point clouds to extracting survey information and developing CAD, Revit/BIM, and digital twin deliverables.
Real-world projects will demonstrate how reality capture can address challenging existing conditions. Examples include documenting complex historic architecture at the New York State Capitol, developing scan-to-BIM deliverables for major building projects, and using high-precision laser scanning to monitor the deflection of a connector bridge during multiple phases of construction.
The webinar will also explore how point clouds can be compared against design models to support clash detection, as-built verification, quality control, and construction coordination.
Attendees will learn how:
- 3D laser scanning provides accurate existing-condition documentation for complex environments.
- Point clouds can be transformed into BIM, CAD, survey, and digital twin deliverables.
- Reality capture can help identify discrepancies earlier, improve coordination, verify construction, and reduce the risk of costly rework.

Part 2: Taking the Digital Twin Underground
Tuesday, December 8 · 12 PM ET | 9 AM PT
The second webinar expands the discussion below ground, where incomplete or inaccurate information about utilities can create major project risks.
DGT Associates will demonstrate how terrestrial LiDAR, GPR, utility locating, and geospatial intelligence can work together to create more comprehensive subsurface utility maps and digital utility twins.
Attendees will see real-world examples of how DGT combines these technologies to improve underground asset mapping, increase utility awareness, reduce conflicts, and support safer and better-informed infrastructure decisions.
Together, the two webinars provide a look at how modern geospatial workflows can create a more complete understanding of a project site—from buildings and structures above ground to infrastructure hidden beneath the surface.
