Flyability unveils new LiDAR payload for Elios 3 indoor drone

Flyability LiDAR Elios indoor drone with protective cage and sensor mounted on top.

Confined spaces and indoor drone specialist Flyability has released a new LiDAR surveying payload for the Elios 3. Available as part of a bundle including training, reflective targets, and specialized processing software, FARO Connect, Flyability’s new Ouster OS0-128 Rev 7 payload is designed for safe, centimeter-accurate scans of hard-to-reach areas.

The new LiDAR payload for the Elios 3 indoor drone comes as an upgrade to the existing Ouster OS0-32 Rev 6.2 offering from Flyability. It offers greater precision and accuracy, a wider range, higher point density, and improved photon sensitivity.

More specifically, the new drone LiDAR payload enables volumetric measurements that are accurate to within 1% of terrestrial laser scans, distance measurements with centimeter precision, and more detailed point clouds with sharper definition. In addition, this product is better suited for symmetrical environments, such as those found in wastewater pipes and sewers.

Adrien Briod, chief technical officer and cofounder of Flyability, says, “We’re especially excited because this is a second payload for the Elios 3 and supports our long-term vision of routine drone inspections with minimal hardware turnover.”

It should be highlighted that Flyability has teamed up with FARO Technologies for a bundled offering because their Connect software has SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) presets that are optimized for data gathered with the Elios 3 indoor drone.

During processing, Connect can automatically interpret reflective targets as ground control points to georeference Elios 3’s point clouds, as well as filter them for noise. With these targets, Connect can align multiple point clouds to create a single, clean result for clear visualization. The outputs can then be exported in industry-standard formats.
