GPS Heritage Mapping: Invisible History Revealed

Imagine standing where a pivotal moment in history unfolded—and seeing absolutely nothing.

No building. No monument. No plaque. Just an ordinary landscape hiding an extraordinary past.

In Lusowo, Poland, a new location-based heritage experience is attempting to change that.

Using GPS-triggered WebAR, the Urban Narrator project allows visitors to uncover hidden layers of history through their smartphone browser. 

As participants move through the landscape, historical content appears at precisely the locations where events occurred, transforming an ordinary walk into an interactive journey through the past.

The Real Challenge Wasn’t AR — It Was GPS

At first glance, the hardest part of the project seemed obvious: augmented reality.

How do you recreate history on a smartphone? 

How do you blend archival content with the modern landscape? 

How do you make visitors feel connected to a place that no longer exists?

In practice, none of those questions turned out to be the biggest challenge.

The real challenge was knowing when the story should begin.

Every location-based experience depends on GPS, and GPS is far less precise than many people assume. Signals fluctuate, devices behave differently, and visitors rarely stand exactly where designers expect them to. A few metres can mean the difference between a seamless historical discovery and a frustrating experience that never activates.

Why Trigger Radius Matters

That reality forced a fundamental design decision: should the system prioritize spatial accuracy or visitor reliability?

The answer came down to trigger radius—the distance from a waypoint at which content becomes available.

Set the radius too small and visitors may never encounter the story. Set it too large and the connection between narrative and place begins to weaken. What appears to be a simple technical setting ultimately shapes how people experience both the narrative and the landscape.

For the Lusowo trail, a trigger radius of approximately 15 metres provided the right balance. Testing with multiple participants resulted in successful activations at every waypoint, aided by the site’s open terrain and favorable satellite visibility.

The lesson was simple but important: trigger radius is not merely a technical parameter. It is a storytelling decision.

What Was Learned

Several lessons emerged from the project.

First, rural heritage sites may be better suited to GPS-based interpretation than many designers assume. Open landscapes often provide stronger satellite visibility than dense urban environments, improving the reliability of location-aware experiences.

Second, trigger radius should be treated as a visitor experience decision rather than a purely technical one. The goal is not maximum positional precision, but a balance between reliability and spatial meaning.

Finally, accessibility often matters more than feature complexity. By eliminating app downloads and running entirely in the browser, the experience reduces friction and allows visitors to engage immediately using devices they already carry.

The Next Boundary: Reconstructing Lost Places

While Urban Narrator focuses on storytelling through location, future heritage experiences may go much further.

Many historic sites have lost their physical structures entirely. Advances in photogrammetry, 3D reconstruction, and Visual Positioning Systems (VPS) are creating new opportunities to place digital reconstructions back into the landscapes where they once existed.

Rather than viewing an archival photograph, visitors could eventually stand in the original location and experience a full-scale digital reconstruction aligned to the real world. In this model, GPS becomes the starting point rather than the destination.

The challenge is no longer simply delivering information. It is recreating a sense of place.

The Lusowo project demonstrates that effective digital heritage experiences do not necessarily require dedicated apps, complex interfaces, or advanced hardware.

The greater challenge is increasingly not technological but human: identifying meaningful stories, building institutional partnerships, and translating historical research into experiences that reconnect people with place.

As digital heritage tools continue to evolve, the opportunity is not simply to visualize history, but to return it to the landscapes where it happened.
