LiDAR Enhances Wingfield’s WingScan for Precise Load Scanning

LiDAR Technology Powers Wingfield Scale & Measure’s WingScan Product Line  

Since 1937, manufacturers in need of scale and measurement solutions have turned to Tennessee-based Wingfield Scale & Measure. Key to Wingfield’s success over three generations of leadership has been its commitment to innovation. The company has expanded its capability beyond scales to include industrial inventories, stockpile measurement, and, most recently, volumetric load scanning.

Since 2013, Wingfield Scale & Measure has been relying on LiDAR technology to accurately inventory stockpiled materials. Knowing its capabilities could do even more to serve customers and seeing a need across many industries for volumetric load scanning, Wingfield Scale & Measure turned to advanced LiDAR technology German software company LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH to develop its WingScan product line. The WingScan product line includes solutions for measuring in-motion bulk material moving by conveyor belt (WingScan-B), open-top truck (WingScan-T), and rail (WingScan-R)

“With WingScan, we are taking our expertise in the field of measurement to a whole new level. We are making it possible to know the precise quantities of materials across the raw material and product supply chain,” said Joseph Wingfield, President of Wingfield Scale & Measure.

WingScan-B measures the volume of bulk materials moving over a conveyor belt and relays real-time data to a facilities’ PLC. With WingScan-B, clients can accurately track inventory as it is moved, above and underground, with customizable solutions to seamlessly fit with existing systems.

WingScan-T applies LiDAR technology to measure in-motion material in open-bed haulage vehicles and commercial dump trucks. Companies can track the movement of material in real-time during large earth-moving projects load by load with WingScan-T with RFID. WingScan-T gives accurate volumes on inbound or outbound client trucks, tracking haul back autonomously. When mounted over a scale, the volume from the scanner used in conjunction with the scale’s weight provides real-time, load-specific densities.

WingScan-R autonomously measures loaded product volumes in open-top rail cars, offering in-motion or stationary scan options and gives reliable accounting of inventoried material being shipped or received by rail. Using each car’s intrinsic RFID tags, WingScan-R measures one car or one thousand, in any order.
