Mapping the Largest Known Cold-Water Coral Reef Habitat
Synopsis written by Adam Clark. Adam has spent the past 13 years exploring the world from above by using drones, satellites, and mapping tools to better understand our landscapes.

Hydro International reports on an extraordinary seafloor mapping missions revealing the world’s largest known cold-water coral reef habitat off Greenland, spanning over 10,000 square miles. Scientists used data from 31 separate multibeam sonar mapping surveys and a standardized approach for identifying, characterizing and quantifying intricate reef structures at depths of 655 to 3,280 feet. This discovery significantly revises estimates of cold-water coral ecosystems and their role in supporting marine biodiversity and carbon storage. The mapping provides crucial data and automated repeatable methods for conservation strategies.
