Ouster 3D Zone Monitoring Lidar
Ouster is announcing 3D Zone Monitoring for its REV7 lidar sensors. Ouster describes this as, “the first high-resolution 3D lidar with built-in zone monitoring,” A firmware update will enable the OSDome, OS0, and OS1 lidar sensors to deliver real-time 3D Zone Monitoring, enhancing their role in automation and safety applications.

Ouster is targeting this update towards warehouse environments, where the rising demand driven by AI and e-commerce giants like Amazon is fueling the need for advanced automation solutions. 3D Zone Monitoring allows users to define up to 128 distinct zones, which can be customized for the task at hand. For example, a forklift will use a different 3D Zone than an automated guided vehicle. Additionally, you’ll likely need to adjust the monitoring zone based on a machine’s speed, steering angle, etc. Ouster’s dynamic zone switching allows for rapid transitions between monitoring zones based on conditions.

Two additional features are configurable filters and parallel processing. Configurable filters help reduce false positives from dust, fog, and other challenging conditions. That means fewer unnecessary alerts, better performance, and increased safety. Parallel processing means that the lidar scanners are also generating raw data output while providing zone monitoring.

The world is rapidly moving toward automation, and machine perception is at the heart of this transformation. If Ouster’s 3D Zone Monitoring enhances efficiency, improves safety, or streamlines operations, it’s poised to become an essential tool in the future of smart warehouses.
