Editor’s Note:
News.gov.hk  shared an article in their Infrastructure & Logistics section recently that highlights a comprehensive mapping project underway in Hong Kong. The RIEGL VMQ-1HA is one of the key tools being used on this next generation of Hong Kong city mapping.

The Lands Department of Hong Kong is remapping and upgrading the current 3D city map that will cover the entire city by 2023, serving as an excellent tool for analysis and planning. Geospatial data on roadways, buildings and all other city-wide infrastructure is being captured using multiple technologies including 3D LiDAR point clouds that are collected with the RIEGL VMQ-1HA. The VMQ-1HA is a mobile scanner system mounted on their “Mobile Mapping System” vehicle. An inertial navigation system and global navigation satellite system receiver provide precise positioning.

Lands Department Assistant Land Surveyor Charlie Hung said, “One of the biggest advantages of this system is its ability to quickly and efficiently acquire data which can be used to enrich 3D models and enhance existing maps.” She continued with, “We can enhance the attributed information of our basic map—for example, the lamppost number, the building name or the street number.”

“Drones are also used to map the city,” she added. “However, air surveying may not be suitable for collecting data from ground level. This is where the mobile mapping system vehicle comes into play.”

With the assistance of the RIEGL VMQ-1HA, the Lands Department will be able to complete a detailed, informative 3D city map of Hong Kong.
