TREKK’s alignment with static LiDAR began several years ago with scan-to-Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications to meet the growing needs of our client communities. As communities face the dual challenges of aging infrastructure and growing population, tools like BIM can help them better understand their existing assets and prioritize improvements. BIM supports planning, design, construction and life cycle operations in 3D, allowing for a more detailed and intuitive digital twin of even the most complex conditions found in the built environment.

BIM was the perfect solution to help the City of Wichita address the growing service demand on its wastewater utility. Creating a digital twin from acquired survey-grade LiDAR data is helping the city rehabilitate its critical infrastructure. This approach is not the first forward-thinking commitment by Wichita. In 2016, the city implemented a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) Program to address the affects that projected changes in population would have on its water utilities.

TREKK and CDM Smith provided a scan-to-BIM partnership to aid in the City’s decision making throughout the life cycle of its wastewater treatment facility while also helping to meet the requirements of the City’s BNR Program. The 3D visualization of BIM improves operations and collaboration when creating or maintaining better design solutions, and identifies assets for maintenance and clash detection.

This reality capture of complex conditions with intelligent data starts with LiDAR scans acquiring engineering grade attributes with survey control. TREKK utilized its in-house static LiDAR technology, crewed by technicians with more than 50 years combined experience. These scans establish a rich, High-Definition Survey (HDS) 3D data set of the project area, which are then imported into an Autodesk Revit BIM model.

“It was extremely beneficial to have the 3D environment where we could confirm locations of existing piping and equipment,” explained CDM Smith Building Information Modeler, Kimberly Reese.
