Imagine an industry-derived and supported standard for communicating between an autonomous vehicle and the cloud. Wouldn’t  that solve a lot of problems and save a lot of time (equals money)? That is what SENSORIS –SENSOR Interface Specification is all about. This is the kind of activity that the 3D Technology Manifesto needs to demand for the construction industry.

SENSORIS, based in Brussels is an open group of (heavy hitter) actors from the global vehicle industry, map and data providers, sensors manufacturers and telecom operators who joined forces under the form of this innovation platform. Driven by the common vision, the actors believe that defining an appropriate interface for exchanging information between the in-vehicle sensors and a dedicated cloud as well as between clouds will inevitably:

  1. Enable broad access, delivery and processing of vehicle sensor data

  2. Enable easy exchange of vehicle sensor data between all players

  3. Enable enriched location based services

  4. Drive global growth in this field

SENSORIS is committed to deliver and maintain technical specifications that define the format and content of sensors and campaign data in the cases mentioned. This implies vehicle-to-cloud data upload format for vehicle-based data only, cloud-to-cloud exchange format for vehicle-based data and other data needed for mobility services, and cloud-to-vehicle “campaign” request format for specific data at specific locations and times only.

In many ways my time spent working with the team that developed the E57 data standard was some of the most frustrating of my career, but the reward of seeing the industry adopt that standard was more than worth it and I would love to be involved in another project of this importance. For instance, an HD Map standard.
