TREKK Design Group Acquires State-of-the-Art LiDAR Scanner

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City-based civil engineering firm TREKK Design Group, LLC, (TREKK) recently acquired the first Trimble MX90 mobile LiDAR mapping system in North America. This technology is a complete, field-to-finish mapping solution that combines two laser scanners with three different camera systems to deliver high resolution imagery and detailed scans that can inform a variety of infrastructure projects.

The MX90 features a six-camera panoramic system, each with 72 megapixels, and three separate multi-angle cameras, one of which is dedicated for pavement analysis. It also features two Riegl VMX-2HA LiDAR sensors that capture a rich, immersive data set at highway speeds.

“As a leader in survey technology, TREKK made this investment to provide our clients with high quality, detailed data, captured both faster and safer,” said TREKK LiDAR Manager, Don Seals, RPLS. “It allows us to gather data at highway speeds while being less intrusive to the traveling public. We can then leverage its processing capabilities to deliver data that helps our clients make informed decisions. We’re capturing the present, to understand the past, to plan for the future.”

Guided by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and inertial navigation technology, the scanner can zoom in and identify small details, such as street signs, and extract features, regardless of the surrounding environment. The pavement camera helps detect and classify various types of distress such as rutting, potholes, cracking and depressions.

TREKK’s technicians combine the collected high-resolution imagery and LiDAR data to create a high-density colorized point cloud that can extract a range of deliverables, including Pavement Condition Index Scores and heat maps to identify trouble spots.

“This investment is another example of how TREKK leverages cutting-edge survey technology to help solve our clients’ challenges while providing the tools necessary for our team members to safely collect and deliver quality data,” said TREKK President, Trent Robinett, PE.

Seiler Geospatial, one of the largest Trimble dealers in the Midwest, facilitated the purchase.
