The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is taking infrastructure maintenance to new depths using underwater robots to inspect the Saraight Bridge. In a major upgrade for bridge safety, the railway authority has deployed Remotely Operated Robotic Vehicles (RORVs) to inspect the submerged foundations of its most critical bridges. Among the structures benefitting from this high-tech checkup is the iconic Saraighat Bridge, a vital rail-and-road link spanning 1.45 kilometers across the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati. This initiative marks a shift from traditional manual inspections to precision-driven data collection.

The Northeast Frontier Railway used underwater robots to inspect the Saraight Bridge and other critical bridges.

To ensure these structures remain sound, the NFR utilized a comprehensive suite of scanning technologies. Beyond standard visual checks, the robots were equipped with thermal imaging, Ground Penetrating Radar, and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity tests. The team also employed lidar to map the structures with high accuracy. This combination allowed engineers to peer through the water and assess the condition of pier caps, well foundations, and scour zones that are usually hidden from view. The data provides a detailed health report for each bridge, enabling smarter maintenance planning.

The results of this underwater campaign have been reassuring. After scanning 34 bridges in the current year alone, including the Saraighat, officials reported no major underwater defects. This proactive approach confirms the structural integrity of these lifelines and sets a new standard for railway safety. By integrating robotics and advanced sensing, the NFR can now monitor the infrastructure with scientific precision, ensuring safe passage for passengers across the region.
