By way of introduction NCALM – The National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping is located at the University of Houston in Texas and is operated in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley. NCALM is supported by the National Science Foundation and is associated with the multi-disciplinary Geosensing Systems Engineering and Science graduate program at the University of Houston.

Craig Glennie, a member of the NCALM faculty passed along a link to an article in The New Yorker magazine on work that NCALM was involved with in the rain forests of Mosquitia, which span more than thirty-two thousand square miles of Honduras and Nicaragua. Some believe there is a lost city – la Ciudad Blanca, the White City yet to be found in these jungles and that LiDAR may be the technology that will help them find it.

The article, which can be purchased inexpensively documents the exciting results the  group has found as a result of LiDAR mapping a primary area of interest. The use of LiDAR is transforming the field of archaeology in these remote, densely forested areas.
