Lidar Glasses for the Visual Impaired

Lidar glasses apply cutting edge lidar technology to allow visual impaired individuals to sense their environment.

.lumen has developed “glasses” that enable visually impaired individuals to understand their surroundings using a combination of lidar, cameras, AI, and physical sensation to communicate spatial information to the wearer.

The visual impairment headset works by being worn on the forehead and strapped around the head where it scans the surrounding environment with LiDAR technology as well as a series of camera lenses. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered algorithms scan the surrounding environment 100-times per second and will relay information to the wearer in the form of haptic feedback to help them navigate more intuitively. Haptic feedback is the process of translating information into physical sensations, like vibrations and pressure.

Components of Lidar Glasses For Visual Assistance

1. Lidar-powered Visual Impairment Headsets – LiDAR-powered headsets for visually impaired individuals offer a modern and intuitive way to navigate their environment.
2. Wearable Haptic Feedback Technology – Wearable glasses with haptic feedback provide a physical sensations that visual impaired individuals can understand as spatial information.
3. AI-assisted Environment Perception – Artificial intelligence-powered algorithms analyze the surroundings in real-time, providing valuable information to visually impaired users.

This innovation sets the stage for many future applications. We have seen cameras and lidar increasingly applied to vehicles for safer, and increasingly autonomous, driving. These technologies will likely become more widely used for improved human perception, or additional spatial context (such as the aspirations of Google Glass), as well. Integration into glasses or other wearable devices will likely provide many benefits, including AR/VR, and possibly everyday uses.
