Innoviz Lidar for Volkswagen Autonomous Shuttles Set for 2026

Volkswagen autonomous shuttles are moving closer to real-world deployment thanks to a new partnership with Innoviz Technologies. Headquartered in Rosh Ha’ayin, Israel, Innoviz is a Tier-1 automotive supplier. The company specializes in solid-state lidar and perception software for autonomous vehicles. Its flagship products, InnovizOne and InnovizTwo, are built for high performance in long-range and high-resolution sensing. Innoviz has already secured major partnerships with BMW and Mobileye, strengthening its reputation in the lidar industry.

Now, Innoviz will supply its InnovizTwo lidar for Volkswagen autonomous shuttles. These include the ID. Buzz AD vehicles used in VW’s ride-pooling service, operated by the MOIA brand. Each shuttle will carry nine InnovizTwo sensors to deliver complete 360° perception. The sensor suite combines both long-range and mid-range capabilities. This setup supports Level 4 autonomy and enables the vehicles to safely navigate complex city streets. Volkswagen plans to launch the service in select cities across Europe and the U.S. starting in 2026. You can read more in Innoviz’s official release.

Production of the sensors will begin in 2025. Innoviz is working with manufacturing partner Fabrinet to meet the demands of the program. The InnovizTwo lidar sensor offers key improvements over its predecessor. It features up to 0.05° x 0.05° angular resolution and a detection range of up to 300 meters. The design meets strict automotive safety and durability standards. With these specs, InnovizTwo can detect small objects at long distances while remaining cost-effective. By using nine sensors per vehicle, Volkswagen autonomous shuttles will gain the full situational awareness needed for safe, reliable Level 4 autonomy.
