XPONENTIAL 2026 Detroit brought together leaders from across the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), drone, robotics, and autonomous systems industries. Hosted by the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, the event provided a snapshot of where the industry is heading, from defense and security applications to commercial drone operations, manufacturing, and startup innovation.

Last month, I wrote about XPONENTIAL Europe in Düsseldorf and what I observed on the floor there: a conference that had grown larger but had also grown narrower. Defense had come to dominate the conversation in Europe in a way that was hard to miss. Commercial applications such as mapping, inspection, utilities, and construction felt quieter. The mix that used to define these events had shifted noticeably.
I ended that piece wondering whether Detroit would look the same. Whether the defense narrative had gone fully global, or whether the US edition of XPONENTIAL would hold more ground for the commercial side of this industry.
Having spent several days at the conference in Detroit, the answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.
Defense and Commercial UAS Trends at XPONENTIAL 2026
Detroit was not Düsseldorf.
Defense was present and visible, as it has been across every major industry event in recent years, but it did not consume the floor in the same way. Commercial applications, startups, component suppliers, and integrators all had meaningful space.
That said, the gap between the two continents is probably narrowing. The geopolitical forces driving increased defense attention are not limited to Europe; anyone in this industry paying attention knows that. The shift is real, and it matters. But in Detroit, it was still possible to walk the floor and have a range of conversations about where unmanned systems actually get applied.
That felt worth noting.

Growth in the UAS Industry at XPONENTIAL Detroit
The exhibit hall was noticeably large, significantly larger than the Houston edition in 2025. More booths, more people, more activity. Interest in this industry clearly continues to grow.
There has been a shift in how companies are talking about what they do. Less “here’s what this technology could eventually enable” and more “here’s what we’re actually doing and for whom.” The AI hype that was prominent at last year’s events felt more grounded here. Products and services were framed around specific capabilities and specific problems.
Whether that reflects genuine maturation or just a recalibration of messaging, it was a better conversation to be in.
What the Floor Reveals About Where the Ecosystem Is
One thing that was very noticeable was component and sub-system suppliers were out in force. Even more than in the past. Manufacturing services, parts, build support, and supply chain solutions were among the most prominent categories on the floor. Additive manufacturing, in particular, had a visible and growing presence. Capabilities have been improving steadily, and the interest was evident.
Drone supply chain security has become a serious focus across the industry, and that showed in what companies chose to exhibit and highlight.
At the same time, finished platforms and end-use-specific applications were somewhat quieter than I expected. Fewer complete solutions on display, fewer conversations centered on specific operational use cases. The ecosystem is clearly still in a phase of building its own infrastructure, and that work is important. But it does create a gap between what gets showcased at major conferences and what end users and operators actually need to evaluate.
It’s a gap worth watching as the industry heads toward Miami in 2027.
Global Participation in the Autonomous Systems Industry
One thing Detroit made clear: this is not a regional conversation. Germany, Latvia, Korea, and Taiwan all had significant representation on the floor. Taiwan, in particular, had likely the largest booth presence in the entire show, displaying an extensive selection of parts and sub-systems to build from.

There were, by most accounts, fewer European exhibitors compared to prior years, an understandable reflection of the current political and economic climate on that side of the Atlantic. But the broader message was the opposite of retreat. Autonomous systems development is advancing globally, and the push for stronger international collaboration feels more urgent, not less.
That came through in one of the more meaningful sessions I was invited to: an Africa Drone Forum discussion convened by Eno Umoh. It was a genuine exchange, firsthand perspectives on the challenges and opportunities across Africa, and an honest conversation about what stronger international engagement actually requires. Trusted partners, clear objectives, and real sensitivity to cultural and social context.
XPO+ Launcher: Where Early-Stage Clarity Gets Tested
As Global Ambassador for XPO+ Launcher and Jury Captain for the UAS startup pitch competition, I spent a meaningful portion of the conference with early-stage founders. Fourteen companies pitched. Three minutes each, two minutes of Q&A.
AG3, WayWave, and Flox Intelligence took the top three places. Congratulations to all three. And to the other eleven companies that took the stage: Airspace Experience Technologies, Althimis Inc., Flightbox, Kuiper Lab, Lightcone Systems, Lighthouse Avionics, Megadrone360, Modovolo, Phoenix Flight Industries, UAVZone, and Valgotech, well done and keep innovating.
The pattern I saw in Detroit echoed what I observed in Düsseldorf. The pitches that landed best were not always the most technically impressive. They were the ones where founders could describe their customer the way you’d describe someone you know well, who they are, what problem they’re sitting with, and why nothing currently available solves it properly.
That specificity is what builds credibility in a room full of experienced evaluators. And it’s what tends to separate early-stage companies that find traction from those that stay stuck in proof-of-concept.
The work of getting there, spending time with real customers, understanding the problem before scaling the solution, doesn’t show up in a slide deck. But it shows up on stage every time.
I had the chance, along with Eno Umoh and Mark Wachter, to run a post-pitch debrief with the founders after the competition. Those conversations are often more valuable than the competition itself. Tangible feedback, immediate application, and a room full of people willing to be honest with each other. It was great to see things click.
The Host City Made An Impression
Detroit earned its moment as host city. The waterfront, the architecture, the restaurants. It is a city that has done real work, and it shows. Many people I spoke with left with a different impression of Detroit than they arrived with. That kind of thing matters when an industry convenes somewhere. The city leaned into the moment.
Michigan’s investment in robotics and autonomy as an economic pillar was also visible beyond the conference floor. The state is serious about building that ecosystem, and it came through in the energy around the event.
What XPONENTIAL 2026 Says About the Future of UAS
Having now attended both the European and US editions of XPONENTIAL in 2025 and 2206, the clearest takeaway is that this industry is in a genuine transition, not just in terms of technology advancement, but in how it talks about itself and where it is focused.
The defense shift is real and global. The commercial drone applications side is still finding its footing at the big shows, even as real work continues to happen outside of them. The supply chain and component layer are growing fast. And the international dimension of this industry, who is building, where, and with whom, is getting harder to ignore.
The fundamentals that determine which companies and partnerships succeed in that environment have not changed. Clarity about who you are solving for. The discipline to stay close to the customer. The willingness to keep showing up and iterating.
That was true in Düsseldorf. It was just as true in Detroit. My instinct is that it will still be true in Miami.
The central question entering XPONENTIAL 2026 Detroit was whether defense would dominate the conversation as completely as it did at XPONENTIAL Europe in Düsseldorf. The answer, after several days on the show floor, was more nuanced.
