Introducing Pointly’s New Mobile Mapping Classifier for City Inventories

As cities continue to evolve, the need for advanced digital representations becomes increasingly important for urban planning and development. Taking this into account, Pointly has introduced a new Mobile Mapping Classifier designed to transform the detection and classification of city objects.

Automatic classification of urban objects in Mobile Mapping scans

This is Pointly

Pointly is an intelligent, cloud-based software solution to classify and vectorize 3D point clouds. The innovative AI models enable scalable automatic classification and the platform also offers advanced tools for reviewing and corrections of classifications – making this process faster and more precise for you than ever before.

Elevating Cityscape Digitization

Pointly’s new Mobile Mapping Classifier is designed to handle the complexity of urban environments and provides an excellent solution for segmenting and classifying urban point cloud data.

Key Benefits:

  1. Automated Object Classification: Utilizing deep learning, Pointly’s classifier distinguishes between various urban surfaces and objects such as Signs, Poles, Street Lamps, Vehicles, Vegetation, Buildings and other, significantly enhancing digital twin projects.
  2. Scalable Parallel Processing: This feature reduces processing time from days to hours, enabling quicker turnaround times for projects.
  3. Seamless Integration: Pointly’s platform not only provides a full-service environment for using the classifier but also allows for easy integration into existing workflows via API, facilitating complete automation.
The results can be used to filter for objects and create city inventories

Training Data & Requirements:

The new Mobile Mapping (MoMa) Classifier has been trained on several datasets from Germany and Austria and is optimized for high-resolution mobile mapping scans. Parts of the training data were derived from the city-wide open dataset provided by the City of Vienna. (Data source: City of Vienna – https://data.wien.gv.at)

Expanding Horizons with Pointly

In addition to the new Mobile Mapping City Inventory Classifier, Pointly offers classifiers for Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and Highway Scans. These tools are designed for efficient semantic segmentation across a variety of scenarios. For unique project needs, Pointly develops custom classifiers, leveraging transfer learning to tailor solutions to specific project goals. The new MoMa Classifier can also serve as a baseline model for further custom developments in digital twin projects.
